A tea break can be the most unhurried part of a busy afternoon. Start with a few simple questions, rather than trying to know the whole menu.
Read the order, not just the name
Check the price and ingredients. If it is unclear, ask whether the order is one cup or a pot, and whether extra hot water costs more. Follow the seating and ordering instructions of the particular shop you choose.
If comfortable seating matters, ask about chairs and steps before settling in. Tea houses do not all have the same layout.
Three phrases to keep handy
Take the useful detail home
If you enjoy the drink, ask for its Korean name and main ingredients. Write those down together. A label or a photograph may help, but knowing what was in the cup gives you a better starting point for finding it again.
Enrique Dans photographed this tea set in Insa-dong in January 2008. It is an archival illustration, not a current menu, service photograph or recommendation of a named tea house.
